Last Tuesday my sister and I watched Confessions of a Shop-A-Holic, what a strange but funny movie. Not only was it good entertainment after some delicious strawberry & dark chocolate crepes with whipped cream on top...but there was some content to be taken out of there from my perspective...a child of God. Below is a descriptive paragraph of what the movie is about: Struggling with her debilitating obsession with shopping and the sudden collapse of her income source, Rebecca Bloomwood unintentionally lands a job writing for a financial magazine after a drunken letter-mailing mix-up. Ironically writing about the very consumer caution of which she herself has not abided, Rebecca's innovative comparisons and unconventional metaphors for economics grants her critical acclaim, public success, and the admiration of her supportive boss Luke. But as she draws closer to her ultimate goal of writing for renowned fashion magazine Alette, she questions her true ambitions and must determine if overcoming her "shopaholic" condition will bring her real happiness. Below is a what I took out of the movie: I believe that we all have Rebecca Bloomwood's in all of us... yes even the guys... we will call you....Roy Bloomwood...!? ok?! Good! We strive for happiness that we hope to last us a VERY long time and the problem here is that we are looking at and for things that cannot give us that satisfaction and most of the time we keep going on in that same pattern of reaching for the same wrong thing because they keep us happy for a period of time much like BRAND NEW SHOES or a bulky new ring. Rebecca Bloomwood said in the movie that shopping keeps her happy especially when she gets a hold of that shiny new bag filled with new clothes...and she will do it again because the happiness meter needs to be fed!! It took loosing her job, her best friend and the handsome man to finally figure out that material things will not keep her happiness meter high! It will expire...like a parking meter does! I admit that I do falter once in a while where I "NEED" to purchase something but in reality, once you get to the store and purchase that item...a ring, a shirt, new shoes or even a bucket of ice cream... all it gives you are stains on your fingers cause the ring is fake, shrunken shirt worn only once cause the material unravelled, painful blisters cause the shoes were too tight and 500 calories that make you feel like you ate an entire herd of cows! We DON'T NEED all the random things we buy...we crave it, and that my friends can be very very fatal. The economy is not at its best. Take that $50, $100, $200 or whatever amount it is you go shopping with and donate %'s of it to non-profit organizations that are doing the best they can to help YOU & your family & the future generation! As Pastor Garth preached last weekend (Feb. 14-15), we can only ever find true happiness in God alone! Work hard to glorify HIS name and serve HIS people! There you will find lasting happiness!
